You want your to-do list to feel like a game. Habitica punished you the week everything went wrong, and opening it started to feel like checking a bill. LifeUp gave you so much to configure (skills, a shop, loot boxes, achievements) that setting it up became the project.

Both are well-rated apps (4.7 stars each on Google Play). They fail different people, for opposite reasons. Here is how they differ, who each one suits, and what to try if neither does.

One gives you a game. The other gives you the tools to build one.

Habitica is a game with rules. You create an avatar, add Habits, Dailies and To Do's, and earn gold, experience and items for checking them off. The rules cut both ways: a missed Daily costs health, and if your HP hits zero you lose a level, all your gold and a piece of equipment. That is deliberate. The threat is what keeps a lot of people honest, and parties raise the stakes, because during a party quest your missed Dailies hurt your friends too.

Habitica does give you an exit. The Pause Damage button in Settings stops the HP loss while you are away, and a missed To Do never costs health. But the default is accountability, and for some people, often people with ADHD, a bad week turns the app into a record of failure they would rather not open.

LifeUp is a toolkit. Beyond a few built-in attributes, almost nothing is decided for you. You define your own skills (fitness, coding, art, anything), what each task pays in XP and coins, what your shop sells, the odds in your loot boxes, crafting recipes and the conditions for achievements. Penalties exist only if you build them. It also has a Pomodoro timer, works fully offline and needs no account to start.

The price of that freedom is setup. LifeUp is only as motivating as the system you design, and designing it takes real time. If you enjoy tuning the system, that is the fun. If you just wanted to start, it is a wall.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Habitica if…

  • Consequences motivate you, and a friend's party quest is a reason to show up
  • You want to start today without designing anything
  • You need a web app or want it on your watch
  • You like collecting gear and pets for a pixel-art avatar

Pick LifeUp if…

  • You enjoy designing systems as much as using them
  • You want rewards that are really yours: a movie, a coffee, a break
  • You would rather pay once than subscribe
  • You want your data to stay on your phone

If neither fits: a ready-made game that doesn't punish you

There is a gap between the two: people who want Habitica's ready-made game without its HP loss, and without LifeUp's setup. That is the gap we built Taskoria for, so weigh this section accordingly.

Taskoria is a gamified habit tracker and RPG for iOS and Android — a Habitica alternative inspired by Do It Now: RPG. Your real-life habits and dailies build your hero's stats; you clear locations of 6 monsters and a boss, craft and upgrade gear by grinding specific habits, and never get punished for breaking a streak.

Swamp battle screen: pick an enemy — Goblin, Swamp Titan, Lizard — or the Mireborn Sovereign boss
Battle screen: pick a monster in your location; the boss unlocks after all 6 are defeated.

Miss a day and nothing is taken away: no HP loss, no character death, no lost levels or gear. A broken streak only resets the streak bonus. The honest limits: there is no web app, the community is much smaller than Habitica's, rewards and items are not user-defined the way they are in LifeUp, and every location from the third onward needs the optional subscription. We go deeper on the first trade-off in Taskoria vs Habitica.

Locations screen: Forest cleared, Swamp in progress, next locations locked until you defeat the boss
Locations: 6 monsters and a boss each.
Craft screen showing Verdant Guardian's Helm with its material requirements
Gear is crafted and upgraded by grinding specific habits.

Still deciding? Our guide to Habitica alternatives covers Finch, MainQuest, BeeDone and Do It Now: RPG too, and the gamified habit tracker comparison sorts them by what keeps you coming back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LifeUp available on iPhone?

LifeUp itself is Android-only. Its core team has built a newer app, ulives, which they call "LifeUp 2.0": it runs on iOS, iPadOS, macOS and Android, is free to start, and has an optional Premium upgrade.

Does LifeUp punish you for missed tasks?

Only if you set it up that way. LifeUp describes its reward and penalty system as something you customize yourself, so by default the consequences are whatever you design.

Can I stop Habitica from taking my HP?

Yes. The Pause Damage button in Settings stops missed Dailies from costing you HP, which Habitica suggests for vacations or breaks. One catch: during a party Quest you still take damage from your party members' missed Dailies.

Which is cheaper, Habitica or LifeUp?

Habitica is free to use in full, with optional subscriptions ($4.99 a month up to $47.99 a year on the US App Store). LifeUp is a one-time purchase ($4.99 on Google Play in the US) with no subscriptions, and its developer offers a 7-day trial build on GitHub.

Is there a gamified app that is ready-made and doesn't punish missed days?

Taskoria is built for that: a ready-made RPG on iOS and Android with no HP loss, no character death and no lost gear. It is free to download; an optional subscription ($4.99/month or $29.99/year on the US App Store) unlocks every location from the third (Frostlands) onward, Goals, Skills, battle autopick, 5 daily battle refreshes instead of 3, and the Pro home-screen widgets.
